“Empowering the Future”
In the quaint town of Hindupur, Andhra Pradesh, I, Vaishnavi Visweswaraiah, was born under the loving gaze of my parents, Y Visweswaraiah and V Rajeswari Devi. They always whispered to me, “विद्या ददाति विनयम्” (Vidyā dadāti vinayam), which translates to “Education bestows humility.” It echoed their belief that “In the realm of possibilities, education is the key that unlocks every door.”
From as early as I can remember, computers held a certain magic for me. When I was in middle school, I jumped at the chance to be part of the “Schooling Young Minds in IT” program. It was then that the seeds of passion for the world of computers were sown.
My journey through Deepthi English Medium High School, Hindupur saw me learning languages like C, C++, and Java. It wasn’t just rote learning; it was the beginning of a lifelong affair with computational sciences.
I recall the pride in my parent’s eyes when I achieved the state’s 7th rank during my Intermediate state board (11 &12th grade) with specialization in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry. That was more than a personal triumph; it symbolized the limitless potential that education held, especially for girls like me, ready to challenge the status quo.
Years sped by, and soon, I held a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from College in Hyderabad. The corporate world greeted me as a software engineer in one of the top 500 companies in Banglore. But the quest for knowledge wasn’t over. The USA beckoned, where I pursued my master’s, focusing on Big and Smart Data. Each course each certificate from platforms like Analytics Vidhya, AWS, Databricks, and Coursera, was another brushstroke on the canvas of my dreams.
One of my most cherished research was my exploration of “Nomophobia” – the fear of being without a mobile phone. With techniques like Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning, I dived deep into the phenomenon, uncovering patterns and insights that had remained hidden. It clearly showed people getting more dependent on technology, and it grew even more during the pandemic and quarantine. The result of my work was published in the “International Journal for Clinical Informatics.”
Life in the USA wasn’t without challenges. Back home in India, families often shielded their children, making decisions for them. This protective cocoon meant many of us, especially girls, struggled with making independent decisions or standing up to societal pressures. Every day in the US was a lesson in self-belief and resilience. I had to remind myself constantly: “आत्मानं सततं रक्षेत” (Ātmānaṁ satataṁ rakṣet), which means “Always protect your spirit or self.” I chose to face challenges head-on, celebrating every learning curve, accepting my knowledge gaps, and reminding myself that it’s okay not to know everything. “Embrace change, let go of fear.“
The echoes of societal prejudices did reach me. At times, showcasing my talent became a challenge, not because I lacked it, but because society often wished to put it to the test. My parents’ words were my anchor. They would say, “Let your actions speak. Your life, your choices.” They taught me the value of self-worth, the importance of mental well-being, and the necessity to carve my own path and being independent in many aspects.
Today, with a solid academic foundation and expertise in AI, I joined one of the Fortune 500 companies in USA as Data Science Consultant in 2021 and by continuing the same attitude of learning and applying the knowledge in real world scenario I reached to a position as Machine learning Engineering Manager within 18 months. I stand as a testament to what education and determination can achieve. My journey reaffirms that women can define their destinies, and that there is a life beyond societal expectations. For every woman, education is more than just academic growth; it’s the key to challenging norms, pioneering change, and crafting one’s narrative. “Infinite strength lies within a woman, to overcome any challenge in the world.” When she uncovers those strengths without any fears, within a woman is an ocean of endless possibilities.
“Beyond my academic and professional pursuits, I’ve cultivated a sanctuary of personal passions. Yoga and meditation anchor me, while spiritual activities elevate my soul. I find serenity in the brushstrokes of my paintings, gardening , cooking and thrill in hiking terrains and navigating waters through kayaking and river rafting. And for those moments when I truly want to feel the rush of life, I take to the skies in exhilarating skydives.”
In essence, my story is a testament to the power of education and self-confidence. It’s proof that with knowledge and determination, every woman can craft her unique narrative, becoming her version of Wonder Woman.
